Shirley A. (Smith) and Hearold W. Montgomery
Shirley A. (Smith) Montgomery, 93 years old, died on March 24, 2021 in Tucson, AZ. Hearold W. Montgomery, 95 years old, died on August 15, 2021 in Tucson, AZ. Their memorial service will take place on Friday, October 1, 2021 at 5:00 p.m. at the Burkhart-Eighner Funeral Home in Sandwich, Illinois.
Shirley A. Smith was born on September 23, 1927 in Sandwich, IL to Vernon and Doris (Humiston) Smith. She attended sandwich schools, which she graduated with the 1945 class. After graduating from high school, Shirley attended and graduated from a secretarial school. Shirley and Hearold met in high school. They dated and corresponded during World War II as Hearold had been drafted into the US Navy. At the end of World War II, they married on October 24, 1946. They were married for 74 years.
Hearold W. Montgomery was born on January 24, 1926 in Grayville, IL to Charles Dawson and Minnie (Daniels) Montgomery. He attended high school in Leland Illinois where he labeled basketball. Hearold served two service assignments in the US Navy during World War II and the Korean conflict. Hearold attended Monmouth College and Indiana Technical College. Their daughter Ardis was born in Monmouth.
After graduating from Indiana Technical College with a degree in electrical engineering, Hearold first worked for Shakeproof Engineering in Elgin, Illinois. He then secured a position with General Electric (GE) in Danville, Illinois. GE offered Hearold many opportunities. He was employed by GE at various locations for 30 years. Their son Allen was born when the family lived in New York.
Meanwhile, Shirley also supported the family. She worked as a secretary in a computer office and at the same time created a welcoming home for her family. In later years she worked for the Whiteside County Clerk, which prepared jury pools for upcoming trials.
Retiring in 1986 meant they could both travel freely and pursue hobbies. They bought an RV and started traveling to visit relatives and see the sights. Hearold also bought a “Basket Case” 1930 Model A Ford Roadster. He carried out a complete restoration and upgraded the car from a standard to a deluxe model.
Shirley meanwhile began collecting antique postcards. One of her favorite subjects was Santa Claus. She ended up collecting around 15,000 cards. She also made an annual postcard to share with her fellow members of the Postcard Club.
Shirley & Hearold were longtime members of the Morrison United Methodist Church. Shirley attended the Church Women’s Monday afternoon club and the local women’s organization WA-TAN-YE.
Hearold and Shirley were very calm, loving, parents, grandparents, aunt, uncles, friends and individuals. You will be missed very much.
