TUCSON, Arizona (KOLD News 13) – “We marched because we’re going to tell men that sometimes women can make their own choices,” said Layla, a participant in the Women’s March.

“This is what democracy looks like in Tucson,” said Barbara Jo Mullis, participant of the Women’s March.

Layla and Mullis don’t know each other and are generations apart, but today, like many in the US, they are banding together to protest a Texas abortion law that bans surgery after 6 weeks – with no exceptions for rape cases or incest.

“Women’s rights are being trampled on,” said Matt Dry, a participant in the Women’s March.

The Supreme Court turned down a motion to block the controversial bill, and pro-choice activists like Dry are concerned about what this could mean for the whole country – not just Texas.

“Human rights are human rights regardless of age, gender or race,” said Dry.

For many we spoke to, the rally was deeply personal, including retired gynecologist Marilyn Medwied of Tucson.

“During my stay, I took care of people who had unsafe abortions in back alleys,” said Medwied. “It is unfathomable to think about going back there.”

We saw no counter-demonstrators at the women’s march in Tucson. However, several pro-life events are held across the country, many of which are voicing their stance.

But even if there are differences of opinion today, the women on the march say that the strong participation gives them hope.

“It’s very inspiring to see how many people come out,” said Medwied.
