TUCSON, Ariz. (KOLD / Gray News) – Police have confirmed that children who went missing after a fatal rampage and house fire on Sunday have been found and are safe, KOLD reported.
The police did not disclose how many children were wanted or how they were found.
At least two people were killed on Sunday and several others were injured in the shootings and the house fire.
Tucson Police Chief Chris Magnus said Sunday the incidents began at 3:45 p.m. with a phone call about a house fire
At the same time, an armed suspect went to the Quincie Douglas Center in Silverlake Park and approached an ambulance that was nearby to make a separate call but to replace the house fire.
Magnus said the suspect, an unnamed 35-year-old man, opened fire on the ambulances and hit one in the head and one in the arm and chest.
The 20-year-old paramedic who was shot in the head was rushed to the hospital in critical condition while the other, a 21-year-old, was stable, according to Magnus.
Magnus said the 21-year-old EMT was able to call for help and describe the suspect and his vehicle, a silver SUV.
Several Tucson Fire Department vehicles arrived at the house fire and, with the help of neighbors, began to fight the fire.
The suspect returned to the apartment and shot at the fire brigade and neighbors.
One of the neighbors, a 44-year-old, was hit in the head and died. Another neighbor was grazed and is OK.
A fire chief, a 17 year old fire service veteran, was hit in the arm and was in good condition. Fire chief Chuck Ryan said the captain was released from the hospital on Sunday night.
“We are shocked and saddened by this pointless act and pray for our injured partners at AMR Ambulance,” wrote Ryan on Twitter. “I’m also grateful for the swift action taken by our #TucsonPolice to neutralize the threat to the community. More to come, but a dark day for Tucson. “
Magnus said the suspect drove away in the silver SUV and disabled a patrol car by ramming it.
The suspect then shot the officer as he got out of his vehicle. The officer fired back and stopped the suspect, who was being rushed to hospital in critical condition.
Magnus said a body was recovered from the house but it was too cremated to determine the age or gender of the victim.
Two or three children who live in the house were missing until police said they were safe on Monday morning.
“This is a truly terrible incident and our hearts are obviously with those who are concerned for loved ones with more severe injuries. We just don’t know, ”said Magnus.
