TUCSON, Arizona (KOLD News 13) – With more children studying from home during the pandemic and summer approaching, healthy options for families have not always been available.

“When we look at the statistics related to obesity, diabetes, or even extreme complications with COVID, many of the links have to do with general lifestyle,” said Abby Charles, Miss Tucson.

Dozens of volunteers gathered at Rillito Park in Tucson on Saturday, May 1st to give away 300 bags of healthy snacks.

Families could drive up and receive a snack bag for each family member.

“A lot of people may need help but have trouble asking for it. That’s why we’re giving away snacks here with no questions asked, ”said Charles Davis, President of the Moonchild Foundation.

This is the second food competition organized by the Moonchild Foundation, the first event being held in November. The foundation’s president said people were queuing an hour before the raffle started.

Miss Tucson created recipes that came in the family bags to make with the free ingredients.

“If we can teach our children to be healthy, we don’t have to spend as much time fixing the problem as we are spending more time preventing the problem,” said Charles.

This food giveaway “Snack Attack” was made possible with the help of Safeway.

“I just love being out here, not just seeing other people who have the same heart or experience, giving, it’s just fun, it’s nice to be able to give back,” said Elizabeth Astorga, Meat cutter at Safeway.

The Pima school principal hopes to work with the Moonchild Foundation to bring such events to schools in the future.

“We can make the children healthier and support the families in need, it’s a win-win situation for everyone,” said Dustin Williams, principal of the Pima County School.

Davis said he hopes to continue giving food gifts in Tucson every six months.
