TUCSON, Ariz. (KOLD News 13) – The family of the 2-year-old girl who was hit in a hit and run on the south side of Tucson on Friday, April 16, speaks out.
“She was an outgoing two-year-old, most two-year-olds should enjoy life, but she is in critical condition in the hospital,” said Paul Hernandez, Catalina’s uncle.
Hernandez said Catalina and her sixth month pregnant mother were at the crosswalk at the intersection of West Irvington Road and South Ninth Avenue trying to catch a bus on the other side. The family was on their way to Fry’s to buy a cake for a party that was supposed to be a gender reveal party. Unfortunately, this celebration was canceled and the family looked for answers.
Hernandez said Catalina is at the fight of her life after suffering head trauma from the impact.
“She’s showing minimal signs of progress, a little movement in her arm, doesn’t show enough progress for the time she’s there,” he said.
Hernandez and the family all have a strong message for the driver who fled the scene.
“Please pose for the sake of my family. You hurt my family, you hurt us, you should at least have stayed at the scene, ”he said.
However, Catalina’s family does not lose hope and they all strive to return home.
“She is a very bright, open-minded 2-year-old child. She loves to laugh; she can beautify any room with her smile; it has dimples, ”said Hernandez.
Hernandez plans to start a petition to get the city to put a traffic light in the area in place of this zebra crossing in hopes of preventing another tragedy.
Tucson Police, seeking help from the public to find the suspect, released this photo of the vehicle, a Ford F-150 pickup truck.
