Tucson, Peoria, Tempe announce mask requirements for city facilities | Coronavirus in Arizona

TUCSON, AZ (3TV / CBS 5) – Cities in Arizona are bringing back the mask mandate for their buildings. Tucson Mayor Regina Romero on Wednesday ordered all vaccinated and unvaccinated citizens to wear face masks in city facilities from now on. The city provides face masks in every facility for those who don’t have one.

The city of Peoria announced similar measures on Tuesday, due to take effect from Thursday, July 29, requiring all city employees and visitors to wear masks inside city buildings. The city of Tempe joined in, saying that starting Friday, everyone in the city-operated interiors will be required to wear masks until further notice. This means that vaccinated and unvaccinated people have to mask themselves. Children under 6 years are excluded. Tempe officials said the new rules don’t apply to city parks, playgrounds, or outdoor areas. Tempe City Council meetings will take place virtually from August 5th.

The mayor of Tucson said the move was necessary due to new guidelines from federal agencies. “This announcement follows the Center for Disease Control (CDC) updated guidelines for vaccinated individuals to wear a mask indoors in public when in an area with significant or high transmission. The CDC has designated Pima County as a “significant carry-over” area. This measure is specific to municipal institutions and does not apply to private companies or institutions. Private companies and institutions still have the option to require a mask to be worn on their premises if they so choose, “Romero said in her statement.
