TUCSON, AZ. (KOLD-News 13) – A man charged after allegedly shooting a police officer in Tucson last month is back in jail after being released without bail. Zachary Oscar Lee, 26, has been charged several times over the incident.
A hearing was held on Friday to reconsider the size of the bond. According to Tucson Police Chief Chris Magnus, Lee was taken back into custody on bail for $ 75,000. “Great work by our detectives and prosecutors to make this possible,” Magnus tweeted.
The Tucson Police Chief expressed concern and frustration after Lee was released for an uncommitted temporary release by a Tucson City Court judge. “I find the situation pretty outrageous,” said Magnus. “The judge calls him a ‘stupid crime’ on this case and says, without any evidence, that ‘I bet he has a drug problem’ but because he has no record she is going to release him unconditionally.”
Tucson Police said Lee had contacted Sgt. Lorence Jove, who was in civilian clothes on August 20 and was sitting in an unmarked vehicle near East 29th Street and Swan Road. After a brief interaction, Lee is said to have shot Jove. The two then exchanged fires before Lee ran into an apartment complex across the street.
Lee is charged with grievous bodily harm with a lethal weapon and firing a gun.
