Tucson therapist weighs in on back to school anxiety

TUCSON, Arizona (KGUN) – Life can get pretty tough, and sometimes kids just have to hear this.

“You are not alone, and as adults we also have some stress and fear of what is going on in the world,” said a licensed therapist from Manifest Joy Counseling Kimberly Ahmadi.

There is a lot going on, especially where children spend most of their time in school today. “Not all information will get through to a three-year-old as it does a teenager,” said Ahmadi.

Because of this, Ahmadi says that you should talk to your child on an age-appropriate level in order to relieve anxiety. “Maybe you sit down as a family and check information from reputable websites that know what is going on,” said Ahmadi.

Like what’s going on with masks and the Delta Variant. “It is becoming increasingly difficult to learn how to use this information and family values,” said Ahmadi.

But says if you take on the challenge together, it can make all the difference.

“To let them know that their fears and stress are real and we want to take it seriously and be there for them,” said Ahmadi.

Let’s dig a little deeper, research from Harvard has looked at pandemic stressors and what else can be done to help children cope with them. Less screen time, less news consumption and a structured daily routine.
