TUCSON, Arizona (KOLD News 13) – The National Weather Service says a possible tornado known as the Landspout was sighted near Speedway and Kolb in Tucson on Friday, July 2nd.

KOLD viewer Kelly Gallagher Julien said she was on the speedway towards Mount Lemmon when she spotted the spout.

Meteorologists from the local National Weather Service office are examining this image.

Emily Carpenter, a meteorologist for the Weather Service, says they’ll be soliciting more opinions in the coming hours, but it looks like it’s more than likely a land runout, some kind of tornado.

The rotation of a land spout begins on the ground and extends to a downdraft coming from the clouds.

According to Carpenter, the rotation of a land spout begins on the ground and extends to a downdraft from the clouds, and they are relatively weak compared to the “traditional” tornadoes we see frequently in the Midwest. These go from cloud to earth; that’s the difference between the two.

Carpenter and Rob Howlett, another NWS meteorologist, say their preliminary indication is that it is a tornado. To be more precise, a land run-out.

If you noticed this today, the NWS Service Tucson office would like to hear from you. They can be reached at (520) 670-6526.
