TUCSON, Arizona (AP) – Tucson’s tallest building is getting a boutique hotel.
A developer says Marriott has pledged to make the first nine floors of the One South Church building part of its Tribute brand, a collection of one-of-a-kind hotels that don’t go with the chain’s cookie cutters.
Scottsdale-based Opwest Partners is redeveloping the 35 year old property. According to Managing Director Tyler Kent, the company is still negotiating with several potential restaurant owners about a restaurant on the ground floor with terrace seating. Offices remain on the floors above the hotel.
The Arizona Daily Star reports that downtown Tucson redevelopment agency Rio Nuevo agreed in 2019 to isolate the site from property taxes for eight years and to share sales tax revenues of up to $ 1 million with the developers.
Downtown Tucson has seen a spate of lodging activity in recent years, with several new hotels opening. The iconic Congress Hotel was closed for part of the summer while it is undergoing a $ 750,000 renovation.
