TUCSON, Ariz. (KOLD News 13) – A man is charged after allegedly running over and killing a drunk cyclist, city police said.

Tucson police said Nicolas Daniel Jesse Tope, 24, had been charged with second degree murder and leaving the site in a fatal collision.

The TPD said officers were called to the 4500 block on East Grant Road before 5 a.m. after receiving reports of a 2019 accident between a bicycle and a white Kia Rio. When officers got there, they said they found 56-year-old John Winston Abbey with life-threatening injuries.

Medics treated Abbey at the scene before taking him to Banner University Medical Center.

The officers also found that Tope, the driver, had left the scene. Police later located him near East Grant Road and North Columbus Boulevard and determined that he was “disabled.”

Police said they found through the investigation that Abbey was riding his bike west on East Grant Road and had just passed North Swan Road when Tope, who was also heading west, rammed the Kia into him.

During the investigation, Abbey succumbed to his injuries.

Tope was booked into the Pima County Jail with the bond not yet committed.
