TUCSON, AZ (3TV / CBS 5) – The Tucson Wildlife Center takes care of a screech owl that’s stuck in a glue trap.
The Arizona Game and Fish Department in Tucson tweeted pictures of the owl on Monday morning. It is not clear how long the owl was trapped, but the agency said it was “under guard”.
People use sticky traps to control pests like rodents, insects, and snakes, but anything can get caught in them – even small pets. “Animals that touch a board of glue are immediately caught and glued to the board and usually suffer slow death from starvation or asphyxiation,” according to the Humane Society of the United States.
The Arizona Game and Fish Department says if you catch a migratory bird in a glue trap – like the screech owl now recovering – you could face state and federal charges. The same applies to bats, which are also protected by law.
If you come across an animal in a glue trap, the Humane Society of the United States says you shouldn’t try to get it free yourself. “In any event, treat an animal caught on a sticky board as an emergency and contact a trained professional. The animal should be safely locked up and immediately transported to a local zoo keeper or veterinarian.”
If you use glue traps for pests and instead catch a migratory bird like these screeching owls, you could be charged with violating federal and state laws.
