TUCSON, Ariz. (KOLD News 13) – Mayor Regina Romero ordered all members of the public – including those fully vaccinated – to wear a face mask effective immediately in Tucson City facilities. The city provides face masks in every facility for those who don’t have one.
The announcement is below:
Mayor Romero released the following statement after instructing City Manager Ortega to require all members of the public, including those fully vaccinated, to wear a mask in Tucson City facilities. This takes effect immediately. At the entrance of the municipal facilities, masks are provided for those who do not have one.
This announcement follows the Center for Disease Control (CDC) updated guidelines for vaccinated individuals to “wear a mask in public while in an area with significant or high transmission.” The CDC has designated Pima County as a “significant carry-over” area.
This promotion is specific to municipal institutions and does not apply to private companies or institutions. Private companies and institutions still have the option to require masks to be worn on their premises if they so choose.
“Since the pandemic began, we’ve been following the science and guidance of our public health experts,” said Tucson Mayor Regina Romero. “Following yesterday’s changes to CDC policy, I have directed our city manager to require all members of the public, including those who have been fully vaccinated, to wear a mask in any City of Tucson facility.”
“Pima County is a ‘significant transmission’ area, according to the CDC, with COVID-19 cases increasing locally and nationwide. I strongly encourage all Tucsonans to continue to follow CDC guidelines and wear a mask in public, whether or not you have been vaccinated. “
The city administration will continue to monitor the situation closely and make adjustments if necessary. In addition, Mayor Romero urges everyone who has not yet received the vaccine to get vaccinated.
“Most hospital admissions and deaths related to COVID-19 are unvaccinated people. For your health, the health of your family, and the health of your community, please do your part and get vaccinated if you have not already done so. The vaccine is safe and effective. “
