TUCSON, Arizona (KOLD News 13) – A handful of residents of a Tucson apartment complex say their management has stopped responding to maintenance requests and is causing their homes to deteriorate.
Monsoon storms could be responsible for some of the damage that left a family homeless, and others are angry that repairs have still not been made.
Local residents showed the KOLD Investigates team through their apartments in the Bellevue Estates Apartments.
Jacina Flemons, who lives on the second floor, showed us where part of the ceiling in her living room collapsed.
Flemons said she was standing under it when it crashed, but she’s grateful it didn’t land on the two-year-old King.
Flemons said she called emergency maintenance but no repairs were made weeks later and now the air conditioning is not working.
The family turned to the City of Tucson, which sent an inspector.
A copy of the inspection detail that reads, “Air conditioning not working, the ceiling in the living areas has been damaged by water causing the drywall to collapse, exposing wooden frames, insulation and some sort of black substance.”
The inspection further reveals that there is a hole in the closet bedroom that is in poor condition for insects and cockroaches to enter. The floor sinks in the bathroom and the dishwasher smokes when in use.
“It is a violation of the property manager. She tried to call him, no answer, ”Flemons said.
There is a lack of communication documented in the report which states that “absolutely no contact from management, inspector will condemn the unit at this point”.
Lena Knew and her nine-year-old son live in the apartment just below Flemons and said it was damaged on their ceiling as well.
“It was just pouring rain here in the bathroom,” Knew said. “They came and looked at it and said it wasn’t leaking anymore, we’ll come and fix it another day. You never came back. “
Knew said it was in May.
Resident Kevin Hand said he was really concerned about the uneven floor on his front door.
“I slipped and fell and nailed my back and head,” said Hand.
Adrianna Pressley, another resident of Bellevue Estates Apartments, said the floor in her apartment was also one of her biggest concerns.
“This floor is about to collapse,” said Pressley.
“We don’t know where we’ll be tonight,” said Flemons.
On September 10th, we called the management company SB Properties.
The person who answered the phone said they took over the property on August 13th. He said management did not find out about the convicted unit until September 10, despite an injury report posted on the unit a week earlier.
Management said they are currently going through the work orders.
KOLD News 13 contacted the Red Cross on behalf of the Flemons family.
