TUCSON, Arizona (KGUN) – The upcoming school year is a priority for parents and students with safety concerns. The Tucson Unified School District released more information about its back to school schedule. A big part of the plan is a new learning option.

“The new school year marks the debut of the Tucson Unified Virtual Academy (TUVA). away [Wednesday], we have enrolled over 1,200, “said TUSD Superintendent Dr. Gabriel Trujillo.

The TUVA offers students and families the option of 100 percent full-time distance learning. It is an option for those who are still hesitant about going to school.

“There is no school district or school in Arizona that can mandate masks under House Bill 2898, prior to Governor Ducey’s executive order,” Trujillo said.

But he says, while the district cannot enforce this, the district’s official position is to strongly encourage students and teachers to wear masks. Trujillo believes the governor not allowing schools to mandate the use of masks is one reason parents enroll their children for the virtual academy.

“We are no longer able to do this, so I don’t blame the parents for not feeling comfortable sending their unvaccinated students into a maskless environment. And with a school district powerless to enforce, what I think was our strongest mitigation strategy. For these parents, TUVA is a viable option, ”said Trujillo.

But security protocols will be in place for those students who will attend in person.

“We will distance ourselves as much as possible in the classrooms. We also make sure there are hand sanitizer dispensers in every classroom and common area. We will continue to offer antigen testing and rapid antigen testing in each and every nurse’s office, ”said Trujillo.

TUSD schools will officially start on August 5th.
