PHOENIX (AP) – An 84-year-old man who had spent most of his adult life behind bars for a bank robbery was sentenced to more than 21 years in prison on Tuesday, August 17 for an armed robbery on a credit union performed in Arizona.

Authorities say Robert Krebs carried out the January 2018 robbery in Tucson about seven months after he was released from prison because he was struggling to adjust to the outdoors.

Krebs, who was in a wheelchair and had hearing problems during his sentence, declined to answer a judge’s question about whether he was responsible for his actions.

U.S. District Judge Jennifer Zipps said Cancer did not seem to show remorse and its past actions had harmed society and scared other people. “It’s the same kind of behavior he’s been involved with all his life,” said Zipps.

Cancer attorney Erin Carrillo said her client committed the Tucson robbery to return to prison because he did not feel part of society after decades in prison. “Get out of the freedom business and go back to jail – that’s what he told me,” said Carrillo.

Krebs served more than 30 years for a 1981 Florida bank robbery and was sentenced to three years in prison after a 1966 Chicago conviction for embezzling $ 72,000 from a bank he worked as a cashier.

He also served an additional 17 years for theft and armed robbery convictions in Arizona in 1980.
