Amazon is building a new facility near Tucson Airport to sort packages arriving by air freight, creating hundreds of jobs.
The 270,000 square foot center is under construction on Alvernon Way and Corona Road, with completion expected by the end of the year. The full-time and part-time positions have a starting salary of $ 15 an hour.
A similar sorting center is also being built in Glendale.
“We are excited to break the ground with these new sorting centers in Arizona, where more than 25 years of Amazon’s operational expertise, technological advances and investments in transportation infrastructure enable faster delivery for our community,” said Marcus Buford, Director of Amazon Operations.
Amazon currently has a large logistics center in the port of Tucson in the southeast of the city. a last mile delivery center near Interstate 10 and Silverlake Road; and an administrative office near Country Club and Bilby Streets.
Amazon’s sorting centers receive packages from air transport hubs that are sorted by zip code before being transported to delivery stations or delivery partners on the last mile.
“Amazon’s newest location, adjacent to Tucson International Airport, will add new jobs to the airport area, a major employment area in our region,” said Chuck Huckelberry, Pima County administrative officer. “This is a testament to the advantages Pima County has to offer as a logistics hub.”
