Two Tucson organizations received $ 100,000 awards for their work in making entrepreneurship more inclusive.

The US Small Business Administration awarded the University of Arizona Center for Innovation an award for its efforts to increase the number of women running STEM startups.

Second prize went to startup Tucson for its work targeting rural and Spanish-speaking business owners in southern Arizona.

Dre Thompson, executive vice president of Startup Tucson, said the organization supports food companies and is running a 10-week program to get new businesses off the ground.

“For economic reasons, for climate reasons and also to create equitable access to our business ecosystem, we consider this program to be very important,” said Thompson.

She also said that startup Tucson will use the prize money to expand this program and its reach in Spanish.

The University of Arizona’s Center for Innovation said it will use the money to hire female interns and place them in female-led startups.
