Female business-owners in Tucson push for representation

TUCSON, Ariz. (KGUN) – More American women are entering the job market than ever, but working from home during the pandemic may have halted that progress. The Arizona Tech Council is one of the largest technology-focused trade associations in the United States. He represents a variety of tech companies, many of which are trying to hire more women.

“There just aren’t that many female candidates,” says Julie Bonner, Chair of the Women in the Workforce Committee of the AZ Tech Council.

Julie Bonner says she’s the only woman in her tech start-up in Tucson.

“I think we want a diverse culture in our company and this community too, so I think the challenge is to find women and bring us together,” said Bonner.

Bonner also chairs the Arizona Tech Council’s Women in the Workforce Committee. It is a group of women from Tucson who advocate representation in the workforce.

“That was the most important thing, that I had to emerge and say: ‘This is why this role is missing, this is what it has to be like and how can I fulfill it’,” said Kate Medicus, CEO of Ruda-Cardinal.

That was especially difficult during the pandemic.

“The pandemic is having a tremendous impact on women’s presence and bonding, and that worries me,” said Daisy Jenkins, president of Daisy Jenkins and Associates, LLC.

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, 1.6 million women have left the labor force in the past two years. That’s 400,000 more women than men, and not many are returning.

“Women had to deal with children outside of school and a lack of childcare,” Jenkins said. “And although we’ve made progress where women are more represented in the workforce, some of the problems still exist.”

Because of this, Jenkins and other women executives in Tucson are recruiting women for their companies.

“I’ve always believed that you had to reach back when climbing,” said Jenkins. “Because sometimes you need someone to sit at the table for you.
