Leverage is an interesting word. Depending on the context, this can represent a high risk (e.g. debt leverage) or represent strategically smart decisions (e.g. gain a market advantage by using a partner network).

The companies and organizations I write about are examples of the smart leverage that helps build Tucson. For example, smaller companies pay employees. These employees, in turn, contribute to the community and tax base.

The influence of larger organizations is wider. Surrounding large corporations are mini-ecosystems of corporations. Think Raytheon, Caterpillar, and the City of Tucson, all of which support a wider network of suppliers and organizations doing business with them.

Then there are the organizations that have a huge impact. Very few organizations achieve this status, and one of them is the Rio Nuevo district. I had the pleasure of sitting with Fletcher McCusker, Chairman of the Board, and Mark Irvin, Vice Chairman, to learn more.

The Rio Nuevo District is a government agency whose sole purpose is to promote downtown Tucson, including the Sunshine Mile on Broadway. Funding them is part of the sales taxes paid by companies in the geographic area they support. McCusker and Irvin are two of six unpaid board members.

The Rio Nuevo board does what it does for the love of Tucson. They believe in the power of the private sector and work to use all of their assets to strengthen the economy and community.
