The transportation and logistics industry was one of 10 “targeted industries” in a business plan for Tucson that was published in 2007 and updated in 2014. Others include aerospace and defense, renewable energy and mining technology, and life sciences and health care.

“We need to get our existing roads and infrastructure repaired – these logistics companies need healthy roads,” said Snell.

When it comes to commercial real estate, Tucson is “a victim of our own success” as it now lacks buildings of 100,000 square feet and more, he said.

Snell said the Recovery Playbook recommends a program to encourage investors to build “special” buildings – built with no finished tenants due to speculation that they will be filled.

Recruiting talent

TMC’s vice president and chief human resources officer, Alex Horvath, said that talented people readily available are the most important factor in a company’s decision to locate in an area.

To be successful, Horvath said, Tucson must nurture its positive qualities, including its open spaces, stability, and sense of community.
