An international medical technology company plans to build a new state-of-the-art facility in Tucson by 2022 to serve as the company’s supply chain hub and final stop for manufacturing and sterilization before its products are launched.
BD – Becton, Dickinson and Company – will invest $ 65 million in a 120,000 square foot facility that will span 32 acres on the northeast corner of Valencia and Kolb Road. The company expects 40 new jobs for the local economy and is looking for engineers, scientists, specialists for quality control and other qualified positions. Regional economic development coordinator Sun Corridor, Inc. predicts this investment should have an economic impact of $ 122 million over the next decade.
“We are very excited to welcome BD to Tucson,” said Mayor Regina Romero. “Tucson’s strategic location, combined with our technology companies, the university, the workforce and proximity to Mexico were the main strengths that led to this successful outcome for our region.”
Tucson was chosen between several of the company’s main manufacturing facilities and three distribution centers because of the city’s location. According to Alexandre Conroy, executive vice president of BD’s integrated supply chain, BD also chose to build its new facility in Ward 4 as the area includes existing and planned industrial areas.
This facility will be owned by BD unlike any other – it’s designed to meet or exceed the strictest environmental guidelines and serve as a template for the company’s other locations internationally, Conroy said.
“Tucson is the ideal location for critical infrastructure and was selected after careful consideration of a number of alternative locations in the southwestern United States and Mexico,” said Conroy. “Arizona’s favorable business climate, the strength of its workforce and Tucson’s central position to other parts of the BD supply chain were key factors in the decision.”
BD employs more than 90 production and sterilization plants for medical devices and health technology around the world and regards sustainable business practices as the top priority in its corporate culture.
