TUCSON, Arizona (KOLD News 13) – As part of Hispanic Heritage Month, KOLD News highlights 13 local business owners who are committed to celebrating their culture with the community.
Melissa Brown-Dominguez and Mel Dominguez own an art gallery and gift shop, Galeria Mitotera, in the city of South Tucson.
“My partner Mel Dominguez is a local artist, so this is also a painting and artwork studio, but we mainly focus on selling artwork and gifts from Latinx and indigenous artists,” said Brown-Dominguez.
Visitors can buy paintings, books, candles, and more. All pieces are from local artists.
“We want to introduce people to local vendors who celebrate their culture and heritage in different ways and even in contemporary views of the arts,” she said. “It’s just great for us to share art with the community.”
They have even given art classes that focused on Latin icons.
“The reason we wanted to choose these people is because we wanted to celebrate their history and keep their memory alive,” she said.
They say that through the pandemic, the community has embraced their art and mission.
“We would not have survived without the support of the community that wanted to shop locally,” she said. “It has exploded this year and this year has been wonderful and I hope it continues.”
Galeria Mitotera is open Saturdays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and works of art are sold at pop-up events across the community.
