TUCSON, Arizona (KOLD News 13) – A man was arrested after a disagreement over COVID-19 logs at a school in Vail on Thursday, August 3.
According to police, 40-year-old Rishi Rambaran was arrested for trespassing and an administrative offense.
KOLD spoke to the superintendent of the Vail Unified School District and he said this was a result of rules for those who test positive for COVID-19.
But some parents in the district were not satisfied with this and decided to take matters into their own hands.
Superintendent John Carruth said there was a group of students in a class at Mesquite Elementary School who were in close contact with a person who tested positive for COVID. He said the district’s policy requires these students to be quarantined, according to the Pima County Health Department.
But the father of one of these students says it’s illegal. A live Facebook video shows these parents and others entering the director’s office.
“One of the other people, not the parent, brought flexible cuffs into the front office when entering the office and demanded that quarantine was illegal and that if the child was not allowed to go back to normal school, they would arrest a citizen”, said Carruth.
These cable ties can be seen in the video.
In this video, the man who recorded the tape continues to tell school officials that this is “discrimination” and that they are harassing children and families.
KOLD went to the store of the man who was making these videos. Today, while he was away, we met the parent who voiced their concerns about the school.
Although he didn’t want to go on camera, he said he planned to file a lawsuit.
However, Carruth believes the group has crossed a line.
“We are working really hard to resolve parents’ concerns and this has been an absolutely difficult and challenging 18 months. But there are ways of solving this that don’t include this and that have no place at all on a school campus, ”said Carruth.
In the video, the man who taped said they had the zip ties in case a citizen was required to be arrested.
We are told by Tucson Police Department that the suspect must commit an offense equivalent to a breach of the peace or a crime in order to arrest a citizen. And if a crime has been committed, the person must have adequate evidence.
“It’s a disorder. I acknowledge that, we acknowledge that, and we all wish it were different, but taking this concern to a heightened level where employees are threatened is just not okay and it is not the way to solve problems , and I definitely hope that we will return to a place where we can solve difficult problems together, ”said Carruth.
The parent KOLD spoke to said they plan to post a statement and welcomes people to watch VIDEOS posted online.
