Today in the spotlight: Susan M. Gray

CEO

Tucson Electric Power

Gray began her TEP career 26 years ago as a student intern and is now the first woman to run the company. She has campaigned for efforts to promote the engagement and achievement of women in the traditionally male-dominated utility industry.

Lesson learned in 2020: “We learned that our confidence in the commitment of our employees came after we moved to remote working and introduced tough new security protocols. Our success with this transition has shown that your employees will meet or exceed these expectations if you assume a basis of trust in the professionalism and responsibility of your employees. “

Source of pride:I am very proud of my role in starting a Women in Energy resource group at our company a few years ago. It offered a more formal way to inspire and equip women to be successful and was another step towards a greater focus on diversity, equality and inclusion. We work continuously to offer this support not only to the women, but also to the men who work with us. “

Surprising fact: “I love football – and not just to see it, but to play it. Growing up, I took part in every pickup game I could. So it’s no wonder I married a football player. My husband jokes that one of the reasons he fell in love with me is because I could throw an IUD. “
