TUCSON, Arizona (KOLD News 13) – Tucson Mayor Regina Romero made her first in-person State of the City address in a year when the pandemic closed virtually all large gatherings.

But in order to be able to take part in the event, the participants had to show a valid vaccination card or undergo a quick test at the door.

About 250 attended the address hosted by the Tucson Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce.

In her address, the mayor first mentioned the difficulty of navigating her first year in office with a global pandemic hanging over the city’s business, but she extolled the success of the vaccine mandate, which was the first in the state.

Other cities followed suit, including Phoenix two weeks ago.

She is committed to bringing Tucson into the 21st century with electric vehicles and other forms of transportation, sustainability, affordable housing, and her Million Trees Program to Combat Climate Change.

With the help of dollars from the American Rescue Plan, she hopes to rebuild infrastructure, increase broadband coverage and increase employment.

While she addressed programs to combat violent crime, the city’s record of 92 murders that year was not mentioned.

A full replay of her speech at the newly renovated Tucson Convention Center is available here.
