TUCSON, AZ – Need a suggestion on how to feel comfortable after a Thanksgiving weekend of hours of cooking, piles of dirty dishes, endless lines at retail stores, long drives home, and thousands of “are we still there”?
Go to the bar, of course – or more specifically, a craft brewery or two in the Tucson area.
This Thanksgiving weekend ends with the third annual Small Brewery Sunday on November 28th. Organized by the Brewers Association, a non-profit group that works with small and independent American craft brewers, the goal of the unofficial holiday is to encourage Americans to patronize and support local breweries.
Here’s a look at the Tucson breweries participating in Small Brewery Sunday.
Interestingly, more than two-thirds of Americans who have reached the legal drinking age live within 10 miles of a craft brewery, according to the Brewers Association. This fact underscores the importance of Small Brewery Sunday.
The coronavirus pandemic hit small breweries hard in 2020. Overall, craft beer sales in the US fell 9 percent in 2020. According to statistics from the Brewers Association, the amount of beer produced also fell by more than 9 percent.
Meanwhile, most brewery owners were also forced to consider local health restrictions, supply chain issues, and changes in the way customers searched for their products.
As craft beer sales return to pre-pandemic levels by volume, helping independent brewers is still vital, according to the Brewers Association.
“Small and independent breweries have proven to be incredibly resilient and have viewed the recent difficulties as an opportunity for innovation. Faced with new challenges, they have pioneered ways to transform their business models to continue serving their local communities and loyal customers. ”Bob Das Pease, President and CEO of the Brewers Association, said in a press release. “With on-site visits returning and new breweries continuing to open, we are confident that the craft brewing industry will recover and grow in the future.”
