TUCSON (KVOA) – A voter initiative to raise the minimum wage in Tucson to $ 15 has outraged several local business owners.
Currently, the minimum wage in Arizona is $ 12.15 an hour.
On Monday night, business leaders from across southern Arizona met at the Union Public House to unite against raising the minimum wage increase in Tucson to $ 15 by 2025.
“We came as a group of business owners in Tucson to basically do a message to stand up for the City of Tucson and the unincorporated Pima County to say no to the proposed minimum wage increase that will only apply to the City of Tucson would, “Grant Kreuger, Vice President of Tucson Business Owners Inc. said.
The electoral initiative needs more signatures before it can be presented to Tucson City Council. Councilor Steve Kozachik says he will show his support if it gets through.
“One of the main costs of doing business is recruitment and retention. Your main concern was … So this can be a little more money that has to be paid upfront, but as long as it helps us retain employees over the long term and we don’t have to start over again stop, repeat the retraining, then we’ll all be there, “said Kozachik. “So, I know there will be some setbacks, but overall that’s the message I got and that’s why I support it.”
Those behind the initiative hope to get 30,000 signatures from registered voters by November.
