Tucson launches program to recognize historic businesses

TUCSON, Arizona (KGUN) – For 66 years, the Tuller Trophy has been helping Tucson recognize people for their hard work.

“When my parents started this business in 1955, Tucson had no trophy stores,” said owner Howard Tuller.

Now it’s your turn to be recognized.

“It is a family company with the same original family. It has a meaning for me. It was nice to see that the city also values the legacy of older companies and has a special program for this,” said Tuller.

The City of Tucson recently launched the Legacy Business Program. It was created to honor local businesses that have been part of the community for 25 or more years.

“It’s the essence of what makes Tucson special. The longest standing companies really add character and uniqueness to our community,” said Barbra Coffee, director of the City of Tucson Economic Initiatives.

Tuller Trophy was one of the first companies to apply for the program. The city plans to give them more than just a title.

“We have defined a number of programs that not only promote their business with unique marketing opportunities, but also provide other recognitions to help them get known,” said Coffee.

The city also gives grants to companies to upgrade their long-standing buildings.

“The facade is a big deal for me. It’s the image that customers see, that the public sees in passing. Our existing one is old, outdated and in dire need of renovation,” said Tuller.

It is this kind of support that will keep the spirit of the Tuller Trophy and many more companies alive for years to come.

“When you come in here, you have a real feeling of place and tradition. I’ll be happy to continue,” said Tuller.
