A man was hit by a car and killed after police said he ran onto East Broadway Saturday night after shoplifting from a nearby store.

Nicholas James Hernandez, 32, died after being rushed to St. Joseph’s Hospital after being hit by a car around 9 p.m. on Broadway near North Wilmot Road, Tucson police said in a press release .

Police found that Hernandez allegedly stole from a store on the northeast corner of the intersection prior to the crash, the news release said.

Hernandez was seen walking out of the store into the westbound lanes when hit by a 2003 silver Nissan Sentra, police said.

The driver of the Nissan stopped after the crash and cooperated in the investigation. A DUI officer found the driver was unaffected at the time of the accident, police said.

The investigation continues.
