TUCSON (KVOA) – The Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility has announced a planned road closure for Monday.

The department said in a press release around 6 a.m. that Tucson Boulevard, north of Broadway, will be completely closed so crews can safely install an underground rain drain over the carriageway.

This full lockdown will be in effect until Wednesday, December 2nd, at 6 a.m. At this point, Tucson Boulevard will be partially reopened to travel south through the intersection.

During the partial closure, traveling north on Tucson Boulevard will be banned and passengers will be allowed to turn east or west on Broadway, according to a press release. The partial closure of Tucson Boulevard is expected to last until December 16.

The ministry said the schedule may change due to bad weather or unforeseen circumstances.

According to the ministry, the Broadway Improvement Project from Euclid Avenue to Country Club Road began in mid-January. The project includes widening the carriageway to six lanes, landscaped median strips, buffered bike paths, sidewalks, several HAWK pedestrian crossings and bus exits. An underground rain drainage system is being built across the project boundaries. The project is expected to be completed in September 2021.

The ministry said that public transit passengers can visit www.suntran.com/alerts.php for information on bus stop relocation and diversions, or contact Sun Tran Customer Service directly at (520) 792-9222. It warns motorists that the speed limit in construction sites is 25 miles per hour.

The press release states that the Regional Transportation Authority, a political division of the state and independently administered, has invested more than $ 1.2 billion in transportation projects and services to bring mobility, safety, economic vitality and quality of life to the region to improve. The RTA collects a half-cent excise tax from its special tax district in Pima County to fund its 20-year regional transportation plan. The plan and tax were approved by voters in May 2006. The Broadway West Improvement Project is part of the RTA plan and is administered by the City of Tucson.
