The Hot Club of Tucson played troubadour on Thursdays last week. Singer-songwriter Sophia Rankin is taking over tonight.

The desert rockers Kiko Jacome Duo drew a small audience when they played a deck show at The Hub as part of the Fox Tucson Theater and Downtown Tucson Partnership’s Troubadour Thursdays series.

Downtown Tucson is simply no longer itself since the COVID-19 pandemic closed venues and limited capacity in restaurants and bars.

But some of that once bustling hustle and bustle is going back thanks to a fascinating partnership between Fox Tucson Theater and Downtown Tucson Partnership.

Every Thursday through April, the two groups host “Troubadour Thursdays,” where Tucson musicians stroll through downtown and play bite-sized concerts on the terraces of several restaurants.

“We all miss the live contact with music and artists,” said Fox managing director Bonnie Schock. “We’re still waiting to meet again at Fox, but we just couldn’t wait to share music in the vibrant landscape of our downtown area.”

The series began on April 1st with the desert rocker Kiko Jacome Duo, followed on April 8th by the jazz ensemble Hot Club of Tucson.

Singer-songwriter Sophia Rankin will be on deck on Thursday April 15, followed by Peter McLaughlin and Alvin Blaine on April 22. The series ends on April 29th with PD Ronstadt and Don Armstrong singing songs mostly in Spanish.

This is how Troubadour Thursday works: Artists meet at 5:30 pm at the Fox Tucson Theater, 17 W. Congress St., and drive along Congress Downtown with musical stops in seven restaurant terraces – Charro Steak & Del Rey, 188 E. Broadway; The Hub, 266 E. Congress; Batch Tucson, 118 E. Congress; Ten55 Brewing, 110 E. Congress; La Chingada, 31 N. Scott Ave .; 47 Scott, 47 N. Scott Ave .; and Senae Thai Bistro, 63 E. Congress.
