“We want a teaching kitchen … that would bring people to our culinary legacy,” said the Tucson native, who practiced as a lawyer prior to the 2012 Downtown Clifton hotel purchase and renovation. “The name City of Gastronomy can be a little opaque to people. You come here and say, ‘Well, I just want to try all of the food.’ And they eat all of our wonderful food like our Sonoran hot dogs and our tortillas and our Mexican culture dishes. But it’s not just that. We want to offer a platform for all of this and the chefs who work with all of these ingredients. “
The bungalow block is one of three Rio Nuevo redevelopment projects along the Sunshine Mile. Rio Nuevo is also planning to redesign the historic Solot Plaza, where Rocco’s Little Chicago Pizza will move, and the Friedman Block, which will be home to Lerua’s Fine Mexican Food, which was ousted from its nearly 80-year-old home on E. Broadway in 2005 early 2019.
Dorman and Lane said it could take a year or more to complete the Broadway bungalow project.
“It’s really exciting to put everything that made us a city of gastronomy in the spotlight and to save these historic houses too,” said Dorman. “It’s a win, a win, a win.”
“I love this place. We love its history. We love the city,” added Lane. “We love its culinary heritage, including making Tucson an interesting and delicious place to be, not just these bungalows Worth visiting and a place to live, work and play is an honor. It is a real honor that we have been chosen to give this place such importance. “
