TUCSON, Arizona (KGUN) – It’s been a little over a year since Old Tucson Studios closed their doors. The famous western attraction was closed due to the pandemic. Now, after a long and sometimes secret process, Pima County is preparing to announce who will take over the lease.
“The application deadline is now up and they are actively reviewing any proposals received,” said Arizona Film Expo chairman and filmmaker Daryl Mallett.
Mallet was also a member of the Pima County Old Tucson Task Force. They helped the county find the right developer to take on the Old Tucson lease. He doesn’t know who County Administrator Chuck Huckelberry will recommend to the overseers, but he suspects the decision will be announced soon.
“They expect an announcement later this month or next,” Mallett said in an interview with Pat Parris of KGUN 9.

KGUN 9 contacted Pima County for a schedule and list of finalists for the lease. We received this statement from Scott Loomis, Head of Design and Engineering at Pima County Procurement.
“Pima County is in an active procurement process to select an attraction operator / leaseholder for the Old Tucson property through a skill-based selection process. During the tender process, we are excluded from dealing with others who are not already involved in this procurement Information to interact with the use of the property or property. ”
While the county is hiding about the future of Old Tucson, a new video of the property shows county workers doing some repairs to buildings and renewing the parking lot in preparation for a new tenant.
Mallett says while rumors continue to circulate about who will take over the vacant lot, he’s confident that the new venture will reopen Old Tucson as an attraction, but will also revive its historic cinematic past.

“There is definitely a deep hope of me and other people involved that they will be able to do some kind of film production there again in the future,” said Mallett. “Don’t get me wrong, films were made there. Even after the fire in the 1990s. People were still shooting in and around the property. There is definitely hope that something formal will be put up as part of the package.” . “
So far, only the district knows who the new tenant will be. They are expected to announce this in the next few weeks.
