Governor Doug Ducey met with the leadership of the US Border Patrol’s Tucson Sector Headquarters today for a briefing on the recent surge in drug seizures and the record arrests of 1.7 million migrants over the past year.

“We have been saying for months that our country has more than just a border crisis – we have a humanitarian crisis,” said Governor Ducey. “Children and families have been confronted with illness, violence and death on their treacherous journey to our border. This has a direct impact on Arizona, especially our border communities. All Arizonans – all Americans – are indebted to the men and women of the border patrol for their dedication and hard work. Thank you to the Tucson Sector Agents for today’s briefing and for your frank assessment of what you are seeing on the ground and what additional action is required. “

According to the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) report for fiscal year 2021, arrests at the border have risen to an all-time high, with more than 1.7 million migrants detained at the southern border. The agency also reported the seizure of over 10,000 pounds of fentanyl, 212,000 pounds of marijuana and 181,000 pounds of methamphetamine. In the border sectors of Arizona, they reported seizing more than 2,600 pounds of fentanyl, more than 16,000 pounds of marijuana, and more than 19,000 pounds of methamphetamine.

In October, border guards rescued two sisters, ages four and six, who were wandering alone near the Morelos Dam in the Yuma sector. The girls were taken into custody and carried a piece of paper with the contact details of their “tia” with them. Unfortunately, not everyone who tries to travel across the border is so lucky. In September, a mother and her 10-year-old daughter were found in the Yuma Desert after exposure to the heat, and their two-year-old son was found alive near his mother’s body.

“We need the leadership of the federal government,” continued the governor. “The Biden administration has to announce that our border is closed. Arizona stands ready to protect our border, and we have and will continue to take steps to fill the void the federal government has left. Arizona is committed to assisting border guards and local law enforcement agencies. “

The governor was assisted by Tim Roemer, director of the Arizona Department of Homeland Security. They received mission and intelligence briefings and then toured the Border Patrol Command Center.

Tucson’s border sector spans 262 border miles and is one of the busiest sectors in the country for both illegal arrests of foreigners and marijuana seizures. Around 3,700 agents work at nine stations. Headquarters oversees the entire Tucson sector, including operations, administration, and operational programs.
