The closure and cancellation of almost everything in 2020 due to the global pandemic has allowed film festivals around the world to raise the bar in 2021.
No in-person events meant much fewer films shot on the big screen before the pandemic.
“There was a bottleneck last year,” said Jeff Yanc, programming director for Tucson’s The Loft Cinema, which is bringing its film festival back on Wednesday November 10th. “When we went looking for a film this year, there was a large selection of. In a way, there was almost a deluge of films. “
Yanc said the quality of this year’s festival, which will be held entirely in person, is superb because of the plethora of options, with more than 40 feature-length and short films showing through November 18.
For example, the festival opens on Wednesday with the Arizona premiere of Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar’s “Parallel Mothers,” starring Penélope Cruz and Milena Smit as mothers-to-be, who happen to have an encounter at their local hospital, both at work.
Yanc said Almodóvar, an accomplished director and Oscar winner, has long been on The Loft’s wish list for the festival.
“He’s extremely productive,” said Yanc. “He’s made a lot of films over the years and they are consistently good. He never really dived into quality. Because of this, he’s built a reputation as a filmmaker that people trust to have good experiences. “
