Through several just-for-fun jam sessions, they were convinced that they would become a band.
Looking for a beginning, they played a 20-minute set at the “UA Unplugged” event in the UA Mall a few days after the band was founded in March.
“My friend actually ran this and they needed people to do it,” said Driver. “Basically, they invite all musicians to come and play.”
The event marked the first time they played in front of a live audience that grew to several hundred people.
“We officially formed about three hours earlier,” said Goode with a laugh.
“I learned her set in half an hour,” added Sciortino.
During that performance, the band felt like they were on to something as more spectators filled the mall lawn.
“When we started it was just our friends,” said Driver. ”
To keep their momentum going, The Basements played a few small gigs at a few North Fourth Avenue venues, including The Hut, and then signed up for the Dusk Music Festival’s “Battle of the Bands” competition, which will be held on October 1st the Club Congress took place on the plaza stage. They were one of seven bands selected to compete.
