TUCSON, Arizona (KGUN) – A National Night Out was held in Grijalva Park on Tuesday evening.

National Night Out is a police-community partnership that began in 1984.

Neighborhoods and associations across the country hold fundraisers, block parties, and community events to promote healthy relationships between the police and those they have vowed to protect.

Midvale Park Neighborhood Association President Joe Miller said, “We’re giving away backpacks, giving away 20 bikes with balls, and all sorts of things to tell the kids that we really respect them – that this is a neighborhood we value. So it’s just about getting together, it’s a proactive way of taking care of our neighborhood. We’re going to spend the money anyway, we might as well spend the money on crime prevention instead of dealing with crime afterwards. “

National Night Out meets on the first Tuesday in August each year.
