TUCSON, Arizona (KGUN) – Santa is back in Tucson and ready for some COVID-friendly visits.
“People are getting used to a new normal now, but I don’t know anyone dying to sit on Santa’s lap,” said Jane McCollum, general manager of the Marshall Foundation.
On the next three Sundays, Santa Claus will sit behind a plexiglass snow globe in Main Gate Square.
“This whole thing was designed with children and safety in mind,” said Santa.
Everyone who comes to visit has to sit in front of Santa Claus with the plexiglass in between.
“It takes beautiful pictures, but it is safe, it is a protective shield so that nobody has to be afraid in times of the pandemic,” said Santa Claus.
Santa Claus will also be at Reid Park Zoo.
“It’s part of our Zoo Lights Holiday Festival, which has Christmas lights and festivities, exhibits and entertainment throughout the zoo,” said Deborah Carr, marketing director for Reid Park Zoo.
He will sit outside with the zebras every evening from December 3rd to December 23rd.
“Last year we had a very different line-up for Santa Claus, we were in the middle of the pandemic and Santa was sitting in his sleigh about eight feet from the public,” said Carr.
This year there will be no separation between Santa Claus and the visitors at the zoo. Anyone can sit or stand near Santa Claus to take photos and read his wish list.
“It’s almost back to normal and of course we’re monitoring the pandemic-related situation every day,” said Carr. “And should the conditions change, we will be flexible and respond to every new situation.”
Santa Claus usually stops at the Foothills Mall, but a spokesman says he won’t be there this year.
There will be Santa Claus appearances for:
- Santa Claus at Reid Park Zoo, every day from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. 3.-23. December
- Santa Claus in Main Gate Square, every Sunday through December 19, 1pm – 4pm
- * Santa at Foothills Mall, canceled
