Tucson police have arrested a man in connection with an accident that killed an 8-year-old girl west of downtown.

Police said Brent William Youvella, 35, fled the scene on Tuesday evening but was arrested Thursday morning. He was admitted to Pima County Jail on suspicion of leaving the site of a serious accident / fatal collision.

Tucson police said Yarel Ruiz, 8, who was a passenger in the car that Youvella’s vehicle collided with, died from the injuries she sustained in the accident.

Just before 10 p.m. on Tuesday, officials were dispatched to West Congress Street and South Grande Avenue to report a serious collision.

The Tucson Fire Department brought three people with life-threatening injuries from the crash to the Banner-University Medical Center. A fourth person was rushed to hospital with minor injuries.

Traffic detectives discovered that a 2015 Chevrolet Camaro was traveling west at high speed at Congress. As the Camaro neared the Grande Avenue intersection, the lights turned green for traffic going north and south. The Camaro continued through the intersection and collided with a 2017 Hyundai Sonata driving north through the intersection.

Youvella fled but was arrested Thursday at his apartment on Block 500 on West Thurber Road, police said. It was the same day that detectives learned that Yarel had died, police said.
