It was big news in June when Tucson old folk singer-songwriter Sophia Rankin announced that her band had a name.
It was no longer the Sophia Rankin Band, a group that included their longtime drummer / little brother Connor Rankin, bassist Eli Leki-Albano and lead guitarist Noah Weig-Pickering.
From that moment on it was Sophia Rankin & The Sound.
The band, who have been playing shows across town since last summer, including St. Philip’s Plaza, Fini’s Landing and the MotoSonora Brewing Company, will release their first CD – Rankin’s third – on August 20th.
But fans can get a little foretaste of “Too Close to the Riptide” when the band plays a CD release show on Wednesday, August 18th at 7.30pm at the Club Congress Plaza downtown.
“I’m so happy with this album,” said Rankin. “I’m very proud of that.”
The album is Rankin’s first truly collaborative project in her career, which she started at the Tucson Folk Festival when she was 15. She has released two albums – her debut “Reverie” in 2016 and the pop album “Solace” in 2018 – of songs she wrote herself, many of them from her teenage experience.
Since Solace, Rankin has been a fixture on Tucson’s stages, including the Tucson Folk Festival, Dusk Music Festival and the Fourth Avenue Street Fair from music to performance.
