TUCSON (KVOA) – John Overall’s broadcast career spanned nearly four decades.
He spent fifteen of those years at News 4 Tucson.
From hurricanes, explosions, fires to myriad other stories, Overall has covered everything here at News 4 Tucson. After many stops, John looks back on his time at the train station, which has become his home.
News 4 Tucson’s Sean Mooney sat down with the longtime host to discuss his most memorable moments.
Sean Mooney: You told a lot of stories on your way here at kvoa, which ones stand out?
John Overall: I actually gave it some thought. When I look back on my career and I’ve covered some important stories here, you know, we went out because of a hurricane, like, I went out and I had to cover the Mars landing and Gabby Giffords, that shooting. But what really stands out during the pandemic, when the Bighorn Fire flared up, we were in an embarrassing situation and couldn’t get to the train station. The whole team had to come together and we worked with a camera and did a 4, a 5, a 6 and a 10 o’clock newscast. Without videotape, without graphics, in the heat of the day, with fire and smoke, and we made it. And I think that was my proudest moment from a team perspective because it’s not about us, you know. That’s when the team came together. I will remember that forever.
Mooney: On the way there you were really involved in this community, what did you get out of it, what do you think you gave to the community?
Conclusion: You become part of a community. You can go to charity events. You go to the Fun Runs and you know, the Breast Cancer Run and United Way events. So yeah, I mean, I got more out of it than I ever gave, I can tell you.
Mooney: You lived in many cities. What’s up with Tusson?
All in all: Something about it gets under your skin and into your heart and I mean, I didn’t think I’d be here forever.
You know, I am humble and proud that I ended my career here. For some reason I don’t know how to answer this question other than say it’s a feeling. I am happy.
