A 43-year-old man was killed in a car accident early Tuesday, Tucson police said.
The officers were called to the 4000 block of South Kino Parkway at around 2 a.m. to report a vehicle accident. Officers found a white 2016 Ford Explorer in the Julian Wash, a concrete culvert that runs under and perpendicular to the Cinema Parkway near Interstate 10.
The driver of the vehicle, Harvard Ortiz, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Traffic detectives discovered that Ortiz was driving south on the Kino Parkway at high speed and exiting the lane. His vehicle blew up and crashed into the Julian Wash, the police said.
There were 23 traffic fatalities in the city this year, compared to 24 at that time last year. Seven of these deaths were in car accidents.
