TUCSON (KVOA) – The Salvation Army is providing Thanksgiving meals to the less fortunate 37-year-olds.
This year the Salvation Army provided passage, inspection and seating. The kitchen of the Greek Orthodox Church of St. Demetrios is like a well-oiled machine, thanks to volunteers like Tim Grimes.
“It’s not strenuous, it’s worth it. The stress of everything makes me hyperactive,” he said.
Since Saturday his volunteer team has been preparing the turkey with all the trimmings so that people like Mary Alice Salcido can enjoy a homemade meal.
“You did a nice job even though we are in a pandemic.”
It’s because of the pandemic, Mary Alice, her dog Chato, and a friend attended the Salvation Army Thanksgiving dinner. You have lost loved ones to Covid-19.
“I don’t know how to explain this, but I am very grateful and grateful for those here on this earth.”
The volunteers are also grateful for their help. Don Roberts and his wife Kiki said, “To give back to the community, to the people who may not have a meal on the table.”
Kiki added, “It’s nice to do this type of volunteering.”
Even the people who provided entertainment were volunteers. Entertainment included a singing and dancing group called “Kids Unlimited”.
14 years ago Martha Desiletes brought her daughter, who was then seven, with her.
“What better way to teach your children how to be kind and charitable than to be in a place like this and help people.”
It worked, and now 21-year-old Em continues to help.
“I can’t imagine how I’d go on vacation without that,” she said.
The perfect end to Thanksgiving dinner, said the cake cutters and volunteer cake cutters who told News 4 Tucson that the task left them joyful and eager for more. The Salvation Army prepared enough food for 800 people. However, officials said they were short of cake and turkey, so they reached out to the community for donations.
