Hockey is growing in popularity in the Southwest, and with a new ice rink in Tucson, Arizona Hockey should take advantage of it.
The University of Arizona hockey team has a glorious history in Tucson and has built an iconic fan base since its inception in 1978. And after decades of playing hockey at the Tucson Convention Center, the Wildcats will soon have their own home.
A few days ago it was announced that the Wildcats will play in the Mosaic Quarter Iceplex of the Kino Sports & Entertainment Complex from August 2024.
Starting in 2024, the University of Arizona hockey team will have a new home: the Mosiac Quarter Iceplex near South Kino Parkway and Interstate 10. https://t.co/5b2ZI0aZIK

This stunning new arena, a brand new multisport facility under construction in South Tucson, can host up to three ice rinks at a time, of which the Wildcats have exclusive rights.
The 3,000-seat Iceplex will call Rink 1 of the Iceplex home and will be incredibly useful as it is specially designed for locker rooms, coaching offices, movie meeting facilities and additional flexible spaces.
The Iceplex and Field House will be Phase 1 of the construction of the new arena, while Phase 2 will include the addition of four restaurant concepts with outdoor seating, open pedestrian and lounge areas, and urban splash pads.
The growth of hockey in Tucson is an opportunity for the sport to evolve, and Arizona hockey will benefit immensely.
Big things are coming to Tucson as the sport grows in popularity in the Southwest. And for that we can thank the recent success of Arizona Hockey and the minor league daughter of the Arizona Coyotes, the Tucson Roadrunners.
A sport that not many here in southern Arizona can imagine, but the new arena could change that a little and the Wildcats as well as the Tucson community will benefit from it.
In addition to the new arena, the school announced that it would add three new teams. Starting in 2024, Arizona will have a Division II men’s team that will serve as a feeder for the current club team playing in the American Collegiate Hockey Association’s Division I league; as well as a Division II women’s team and an adaptive track and field sled hockey team.
In addition, the new facility will be used by more club teams in Tucson, which means more opportunities for the sport to continue to grow and take off.
Either way, this is an exciting time for Arizona Hockey. Under head coach Chad Berman, the team has been extremely competitive with the Wildcats currently ranked 14th in the country, a 13-5 record and a current eight-game winning streak.
