An 18-inch figure of Popeye the Sailor Man peered off a shelf at Vinny Cuadrado on a Thursday afternoon.

The King Features toy has been with Cuadrado since he was 4 years old. Today he is 46. After his wife and children, Popeye is one of the most important things in his life.

“My parents bought it for me,” he says. “My family knows that if the house burns down, Popeye should snap. Toys come and go, but the original things I owned are close to my heart. “

Little did Cuadrado’s parents know when they bought him his Popeye that their son would one day become a toy collector in Tucson.

When a mega toy or comic book collection is looking for a new home, he is often the one to buy it.

“I was lucky,” he said. “I bought thousands of toys at the same time; 25,000 comic books; three truckloads of action figures. “

Cuadrado even launched his own toy show, the Attack Toy & Comic Show, which this Saturday, April 17th, becomes the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 180, 1530 N. Stone Ave. returns.

The show is modest in size compared to the Tucson Toy Show, which takes place annually at the Tucson Expo Center. Originally scheduled for March, this show will attract thousands of buyers and has been postponed to 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
