TUCSON (KVOA) – The City of Tucson gives the green light to reducing speed limits on two busy corridors to help keep residents and drivers safe in the area.

Tucson City Transportation Engineer Blake Olofson, who makes recommendations and checks roads, says speed limits within the city of Tucson are set by a city council ordinance.

“Any speed limit reduction, even minor, can have a significant impact,” said Olofson.

South 12th Avenue, near Irvington and Drexel Streets, is one of two places where speed limits have already been changed from 35 to 30 mph.

City officials said the Valencia Road between Kolb and Houghton has already placed work orders at 45 mph to ensure a uniform speed limit.

“You can still navigate the corridor efficiently, but also safely if you need to access shops and restaurants on both sides,” said Olofson.

Christopher Reagan has lived near Valencia Road for three years and said the speed limit isn’t the problem and hopes the city can consider other changes.

“It would be nice if they widened the street with the increase in population and with the increase in housing.
