“It’s so overwhelming for us,” said Andrew Bergthold. “We were making music in a basement and then suddenly … when the first song came into contact with people, it was more like a seal of approval and from there it became our full-time job.”

We the Kingdom is a family affair: brothers Scott and Ed Cash, an award-winning producer and songwriter; Ed’s children, Franni Rae and Martin Cash; and Bergthold, a longtime family friend.

The Nashville, Tennessee band formed in 2018 while attending a Christian youth camp hosted by Scott Cash. The members had had a traumatic year that tested not necessarily their faith but their trust. Franni Rae Cash described it in a phone interview from Nashville last month as a case of spiritual abuse that rocked them all quite a bit.

“We had to learn almost all over again who God was, who Jesus was,” she said of the situation, which, in her opinion, unfortunately occurs too often today. “It has put a heavy strain on our mental health and our families. The five of us had this shared experience together and were able to process it together. “

And it was at this processing stage that We, the Kingdom, were born.

After an evening service at the youth camp, the five got together and someone brought a mandolin. They began sketching verses and texts that they imagined the Lord would say to the children in their care.
