A man was killed in a head-on collision with a school bus on the southwest side of Tucson on Wednesday morning.

At the time of the accident, which occurred on Valencia Road and Camino de la Tierra, there were no children on the Tucson Unified School District bus.

At around 7:20 a.m., the Pima County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the area, where they learned that the driver of a car driving east on Valencia was using the west lanes to avoid a car crashing into the stopped in traffic.

In the lanes to the west, the car collided with the school bus, according to a press release. The school bus then ran into oncoming traffic and collided with a pickup truck that was being driven by 34-year-old Ronnie Estrella.

Estrella died on the scene. No other serious injuries were reported.

The lane was closed until shortly before 5 p.m.

The investigation continues, although neither speed nor impairment appear to be a factor, the sheriff’s department said.

TUSD confirmed that the bus driver was working with MPs during the investigation.
