Last April, the Women’s Premier Soccer League canceled the season due to concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic.
Powers admits that the WPSL’s decision to continue the season a year later took them by surprise, and everyone at Tucson FC was busy planning a men’s season.
“We had it written off in our head because the season wasn’t going to happen,” said Powers. “But when you have so many irons in the fire and something strikes, it’s like ‘Let’s go!'”
Powers went to work with Head Coach Kelly Pierce and Team Administrator Charlie MacCabe to find out where they were and what else they needed.
“We had sponsors from the 2020 season … and individuals to put money into the season, but we had fundraising issues and we didn’t have a shirt sponsor front,” said Powers.
This is where Gee came in.
“I spoke to Angela on the phone about the bigger picture of the FC as a whole,” said Powers. “She really did that.”
Powers also told Gee about the team’s tagline, which alludes to the phrase “It starts in Tucson,” which was used to promote the May MLS preseason game at Kino Stadium.
While promoting the Tucson FC women’s player trial event, Powers saw people say, “It starts in Tucson,” and she realized the team needed to dedicate their fast approaching season to that slogan.
